Sewage treatment or domestic wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff and domestic. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove various kinds of contaminants. Its objective is to produce a waste stream and a solid waste or sludge, suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment. This material is often inadvertently contaminated with many toxic organic and inorganic compounds.
Sewage may include stormwater run-off. Sewerage systems capable of handling storm water are known as combined sewer systems. Combined sewers require much larger and more expensive treatment facilities than sanitary sewers. Heavy volumes of storm run-off may overwhelm the sewage treatment system, causing a spill or overflow. Sanitary sewers are typically much smaller than combined sewers, and they are not designed to transport stormwater.
The present comparative eco-biotic study presented in this book has been undertaken to assess the impact of sewage pollution on the present status of the water bodies and to suggest measures for its improved management. In the present work, comparative studies have been made on the physiochemical analyses of water, community structure and seasonality of plankton, macro zoobenthos and primary productivity of the pond water as well.
