Abstracting and Indexing started in the early part of the 19th century to assist the researcher keep up with the increasing current developments in an age of information explosion. The indexer usually receives a set of page proofs for the book. The indexer reads the page proofs, making a list of headings and subheadings and the location of each pertinent reference. After that the indexer edits it for structure, clarity and consistency, formats it to specifications, proofreads it and submits it to the client in hard-copy form, on disk, by modem, or by e-mail. An index is a systematic guide to items contained in or concepts devised from a collection. Indexing is a service operation. It is the necessary communication link between a source of information, the collection and those who would obtain some information from it.
Abstracts, like all summaries, cover the main points of a piece of writing. Abstracts use the same level of technical language and expertise found. An abstracting service is a service that provides abstracts of publications, often on a subject or group of related subjects, usually on a subscription basis.
