The internet today provides essential communication between billions of people. With the advent of e-commerce an increasing amount of personal information is exchanged between users and portals making digital security of paramount importance. One essential aspect for secure communications is that of cryptography.

Cryptography is the science of secret writing is an ancient art; the first documented use of cryptography in writing dates back to circa 1900 B.C. In data and telecommunications, cryptography is necessary when communicating over any untrusted medium, which includes just about any network, particularly the Internet.

Network security covers a variety of computer networks; both public and private, that are used in everyday jobs conducting transactions and communications among businesses, government agencies and individuals. Networks can be private, such as within a company, and others which might be open to public access. The practices adopted to prevent unauthorised access, misuse, modification or denial of a network come under this discipline.

The purpose of this book is to provide a practical survey of both the principles and practices of cryptography and network security. In the first half, the basic issues to be addressed by a network security capability are explored by providing a tutorial and survey of cryptography and network security technology. The latter part deals with the practice of network security practical applications that have been implemented and are in use to provide network security. The author is an esteemed authority on the subject and has even completed a PhD in the same field.
